Abstract: The chromium nitride was obtained on the quenched and tempered H13 steel substrate by using chromium plating and gas nitriding at 540 ℃. Then the abrasion resistance test was performed and the microstructure and wear resistance of H13 steel specimens after conventional gas nitriding and ion nitriding at the same temperature were compared. The results show that the main wear mechanisms of the specimens after three different heat treatment are adhesion wear and abrasive wear. The chromium plated and gas nitrided specimens show the lowest average friction coefficient, 0.44, and the wear resistance is the best, but the adhesion between the Cr-plated+gas nitriding layer and the substrate is the worst.
