Abstract: Appearance of fracture, metallurgical structure and chemical composition of the failed 50CrV4 washer were observed or tested by means of SEM, EDS, OM and spark direct reading spectrometer, respectively. The test results show that carbide segregation occurred due to the chemical composition segregation of washer raw materials causes local stress concentration. During quenching and cooling, intergranular cracks appear in the washer under the stress. During subsequent use, the cracks further expand under the action of external force and lead to the earlier failure.
