Abstract: Sizes of 55SiCr steel suspension springs were found out-of-tolerance in the rolling process. The reason of the size out-of-tolerance was analyzed by means of OM, EMPA and XRD. The results show that excessive retained austenite is found in the 55SiCr steel wires to produce the suspension springs due to insufficient cooling during heat treatment, which is the main reason of size out-of-tolerance. Content of retained austenite in the steel wire can be effectively reduced by reducing the temperature of cooling water.

Key words: 55SiCr steel, suspension spring, size out-of-tolerance, retained austenite
